The Free and Sovereign State of Mexico is one of the 32 federal entities of the Mexican Republic. It is located in the central area of the Mexican Republic. With an area of 22,351 km2, it represents 1.1% of the national territory. Its capital is the city of Toluca de Lerdo and is divided into 125 municipalities. The name of the state of Mexico originates from Mexico-Tenochtitlan, former capital of the Mexicans. The word is derived from the Nahuatl word, which is composed of the following etymological roots: metztli, "moon"; xictli, "navel", and co, "place", which means "the place of the navel of the moon" or otherwise said "in the center of the moon lake".
