Copenhagen

Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, is by far the country's largest city. Here, you'll find the Parliament (Folketing) in Christiansborg , known to many through the Danish TV series Borgen , and the residence of the Royal Family in Amalienborg . The most laid-back capital in American Scandinavia, Copenhagen has a distinctly European feel, a friendly street life and a unique café culture that will make you want to return again and again. The city is perfect for wandering around at your leisure, or alternatively, make like a local and take a bike, the preferred mode of transport for many. Throughout the town, there is a nautical atmosphere reflected in the colourful seaside houses of Nyhavnand tall ships anchored along the docks Remember, too, that it is here that many would argue that the bustling Scandinavian food revolution began. Consequently, Copenhagen is home to a large number of state-of-the-art restaurants, including the world-famous Noma, where tables must be booked months, if not years, in advance.

Oslo

Oslo is one of the world's largest capitals in terms of land area, but only 20 percent of this land mass is developed - the rest is made up of parks, protected forests, hills and hundreds of lakes. Parks and open spaces are an integral part of Oslo's urban landscape and are easily accessible from almost anywhere in the city. The centre is a joy to explore on foot thanks to the many paths and trails connecting its public spaces, as well as the many pedestrian-friendly areas, such as the city's main street, Karl Johans Gate . Across from Oslo's main railway station near the waterfront to the Royal Palace , this major avenue passes many of Oslo's tourist attractions such as the palace, the National Theatre, the old university buildings and Oslo Cathedral . Regularly ranked as one of the best cities in the world where to live, Oslo has a rich cultural scene and plenty of things to do, and is famous for its theatre, museums and galleries.

Stockholm

Often called the 'Venice of the North', Stockholm is located on several islands and peninsulas across the outflow of Lake Mälar in the Baltic, which here forms a deep inlet. The fascination of its surroundings lies in the intertwining of land and water - the scaffolding that surrounds the shore, the rocks diverted from the sea, the intricate pattern of waterways that encircle the city. World-class museums, theatres, galleries and beautiful parks await and the journey couldn't be easier. The excellent underground railway system, the Tunnelbana (T-bana), takes you almost anywhere in the city. A highly efficient and regular bus network covers any gaps between destinations. Alternatively, take some time to walk, as Stockholm is an amazing city to absorb on foot. The city also has an efficient network of cycle lanes. Locals proudly call the city "levande stad" or "living city", as much of the cosmopolitan population still lives in the downtown areas. A short distance from the city, you can explore the UNESCO-listed Drottningholm Palace and other fun tourist attractions on day trips

Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and its largest city and is located on a granite peninsula on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland, overlooking the Baltic Sea. King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden founded Helsinki in 1550, and in 1808 the city was incorporated into the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland. After a major fire destroyed a third of the city in 1808, Carl Ludwig Engel (1778-1840) was commissioned to rebuild it, and the resulting neoclassical city centre is set in large beautiful streets and avenues with abundant parks. The harbour, where many of the nearly 300 cruise ships that visit each year anchor, is right in the heart of Helsinki and many of the top tourist attractions are within walking distance. Helsinki is a great city to explore on foot or by bike and has an excellent public transport system that includes boats to the islands and trains to other destinations in Finland.
